Who are Red Star Belgrade? Rangers face Europa League throwback as last 16 draw evokes mixed memories

Rangers have had mixed fortunes against Red Star Belgrade in their meetings since they first clashed almost 60 years ago.

But fans hoping the draw against the Serbian side is a lucky omen will point to the fact that the season they last went head to head the Light Blues went all the way to the UEFA Cup final.

To do that, they had to survive the intimidating Marakana Stadium and will have to do the same again in the return leg of their last 16 tie on March 17.

However, there's no doubt that on paper the draw could have been tougher although just four goals conceded in the group stage suggests they could be stuffy opponents.

But having seen off Borussia Dortmund, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his men will fancy their chances of reaching the quarter finals.

Here, Record Sport Online looks at the Serbian SuperLiga side and the threat they will pose.

Who are Red Star Belgrade?

Well, they are actually Crvena Zvezda as they are now formally referred to by UEFA.

But better known as Red Star Belgrade, they were founded in 1945 and play at the 53,000 Rajko Mitic Stadium.

They are the most successful team in the history of Serbian football, with more than two dozen national titles.

They are currently five points behind their great rivals Partizan Belgrade in another two-horse race for the Serbian title this season.

How did they reach this stage?

The Serbians qualified directly into the last 16 as winners of Europa League Group F.

They finished one point ahead of Braga, drawing 1-1 in Portugal and winning 2-1 at home, who Gers defeated in the knockout stage two seasons ago.

Celtic's Champions League conquerers Midtjylland were also in the section and they failed to beat the Danes with a 1-0 loss at home and 1-1 draw away.

But they dropped into the Europa League after losing to Champions League shock troops Sheriff Tiraspol in a qualifier having defeated Kairat Almaty in their first round.

That saw them go into the play off for the Europa League and they demolished FC Cluj to reach the group stage.

Manager - Dejan Stankovic

The former Inter Milan and Lazio striker has been in charge since 2019 and needs little introduction.

He came through the youth ranks at Red Star Belgrade as a player and spent three years in the first team before moving to Italy where he won six Serie A titles and the European Cup Winners' Cup and European Super Cup with Lazio.

Stankovic was a legend at international level, earning more than 100 caps for Serbia and featured at the 1998 and 2006 World Cups.

He is the only man in history to have represented three different countries at the World Cup - Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Serbia.

He has won two Serbian titles and Cup, leading his team to an unbeaten season, just like Rangers last season, having won 35 out of 38 games.

Star man - Aleksandar Katai

The winger and Serbian international has six goals to his name in the Europa League this season.

He previously spent two years at LA Galaxy but his MLS career ended in controversy after racists posts made on social media by his wife.

That resulted in him returning to his homeland and he has since averaged a goal every other game.

Who else do Rangers need to worry about?

Austrian international Aleksandar Dragovic has been capped almost 100 times and previously had a loan spell at Leicester City.

He has also played for Austria Vienna, Basel, Bayer Leverkusen and Dynamo Kiev.

Tough-tackling centre back who could have a fascinating battle with Alfredo Morelos.

European record

There is one achievement in Red Star's history that stands out above all others - the immortal triumph of their 1991 European Cup win.

That side is regarded as one of the best ever in football and they had to be to beat the great Marseille - including Chris Waddle - side of the early 1990s in the final.

Their success was even more monumental given the fact it was set against the backdrop of the Yugoslav Wars.

They boasted legendary talents such as chain-smoking whisky drinker Robert Prosinecki, Dejan Savicevic and prolific striker Darko Pancev.

Previous meetings

Rangers have faced Red Star Belgrade on three previous occasions in European competition.

And the Ibrox side will be hoping history repeats itself as the last time they met it was the season they reached the UEFA Cup final.

Walter Smith's men edged the Serbians 1-0 over two legs - thanks to Nacho Novo's goal - in a Champions League qualifier and after dropping into the second tier competition later that season went all the way to Manchester.

That saw the Light Blues earn a bit of revenge for the previous meeting between the sides.

Graeme Souness was in charge in 1990/91 when the greatest Red Star side in history swatted them aside 4-1 on aggregate on their way to lifting the trophy with a penalty shoot out win over Marseille in Bari.

Rangers won the first ever clash between the sides when they met in the first round of the European Cup in 1964/65.

The Ibrox side won the first leg 3-1 but were 4-1 down with just seven minutes left in the return when Ronnie McKinnon added to a John Greig goal.

Before the days of away goals the tie went to a neutral venue - Highbury Stadium - and Rangers triumphed 3-1.
