Who are Crvena Zvezda? One of the clubs that Spurs will face in the Champions League group stage

Tottenham Hotspur have found out the teams that they will face in this year's Champions League group stage.

The draw for the competition was made on Thursday evening in Monaco, with Spurs being drawn in group B along with Bayern Munich, Crvena Zvezda and Olympiacos.

Spurs will be looking to go one better in the tournament this time around, after falling to defeat to Liverpool in the final last season, but they will have to beat off competition from the German Champions, Greek runners-up and Crvena Zvezda in order to make it through the group stage.

While two of the three names are likely to be familiar with Spurs fans, the third team may raise a question, who are Crvena Zvezda? Where do they play? And how did they make it to the Champions League group stage?

Who are Crvena Zvezda?

Crvena Zvezda, more commonly known in English as Red Star Belgrade are the the Serbian Champions, having won the title for the past two seasons. The club were founded in March 1945, and have dominated Serbian football.

The club won the European Cup in 1991, beating Marseille in a penalty shootout in the final of the competition.

How did they make it to the group stage?

The Serbian Champions made it through tho the group stage of the competition for the second year running via the away goals rule. A 2-2 away draw against Young Boys was followed by a 1-1 home draw that saw the club make it through.

Players celebrated the achievement by riding a tank through the streets.

What is their history in the competition?

As previously mentioned, Red Star have previously won the European Cup, lifting the trophy almost 30 years ago in 1991.

Last season, the club came through qualifying against Red Bull Salzburg, again on away goals, to make it to the group stage, where they faced Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Liverpool.

The Serbian club picked up four points from the stage by drawing 0-0 with Napoli and beating Liverpool 2-0 at home, although they did also suffer defeats of 6-1 and 4-1 courtesy of PSG and Liverpool.

A player to look out for?

Ghana international striker Richmond Boakye has been in good Champions League form for the Serbian club, scoring three goals during qualifying. The 26-year-old has scored an impressive 55 goals in 76 appearances for the club, including 13 league goals in 15 appearances last season, although he didn't manage to find the net in the Champions League.
