Who are Angela Rayner’s family?

Angela Rayner has resigned as deputy prime minister following a scandal which revealed she underpaid £40,000 of stamp duty on her £800,000 flat in Hove.

It comes as lawyers she blamed for her stamp duty underpayment denied having given her tax advice.

When she discussed the scandal, she explained it was a complicated situation, having set up a trust for her disabled son after he received a financial reward in 2020.

The payout came after an 11-year legal battle between the Rayners and the hospital where their son was born, as reported by the Telegraph.

Unlike many politicians, Rayner didn’t have an easy start in life. She grew up on a council estate in Stockport in the 1980s and aged six, she became a carer for her mother who was disabled. Rayner then left school at 16 after becoming pregnant, going on to start work as a care worker at nights.

Now you know about her roots, you might ask who are Rayner’s family and partners? See the full list below:

Although their relationship has been on and off since 2022, Sam Tarry is Rayner’s current boyfriend. Tarry is a former Labour MP who was sacked from his role as shadow transport minister in July 2022 by Sir Keir Starmer after giving an unauthorised interview from a picket line during rail strikes.

Mark Rayner

Mark Rayner is Angela Rayner’s former husband, with whom she had her two sons Jimmy and Charlie. They married in 2010, but split in early 2020. Mr Rayner works as a Unison officer.

Neil Batty

Between 1995 and 2005, Rayner was in a relationship with Neil Batty, the father of her eldest son Ryan. Rayner claims the pair remain good friends.

Children

Jimmy, Rayner’s youngest son, lives with his father Mark on the outskirts of Manchester.

Charlie Rayner, 17

Charlie is Rayner’s middle child and first with Mark Rayner. Charlie was born prematurely at 23 weeks old, weighing just 1lb. He is registered as blind and has learning difficulties.

Ryan Batty, 27

Ryan is Rayner’s eldest son, with whom she became pregnant at the age of 16. He now has his own child, which made Rayner a grandmother aged 37.

At the arrival of her grandchild, one of her front-bench colleagues dubbed Rayner “Grangela”.

Mother

Rayner become a carer for her mother aged six, as she had bipolar disorder and a developmental disability. Due to being unable to read or write, her mother once gave Rayner dog food to eat by accident as a result of being unable to understand the labelling on the tin, as reported in Vogue.
