Whittaker-Adesanya UFC rematch locked in

The UFC title rematch is set between Australia's Robert Whittaker (l) and Kiwi Israel Adesanya (r). (AAP)

Robert Whittaker's rematch with Israel Adesanya for the UFC middleweight crown has been locked in for Houston on the same weekend as the NFL's Super Bowl.

The Australian lost the title to Nigerian-born New Zealander Adesanya in front of 60,000 fans in Melbourne two years ago at UFC 243.

But after three straight wins he has earned a chance to claim it back in a UFC 271 trans-Tasman blockbuster in Texas on February 13, coinciding with Super Bowl LVII in California.

Since their last fight, Whittaker has halted title hopefuls Jared Cannonier, Kelvin Gastelum and Darren Till while Adesanya has defended his title three times, defeating Yoel Romero, Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori.

"Time to get back what's mine," Whittaker tweeted after the fight was made official on Sunday.

Australian female fighter Casey O'Neill, Sydneysider Jacob Malkoun and Aucklander Carlos Ulberg could also feature on the UFC 271 card at Houston's Toyota Centre.
