Whitley Bay Spanish City reopening delayed by a week to ensure public safety

The reopening of two venues at the Spanish City Dome has been delayed by a week, its operators have confirmed.

Fish and chip restaurant Trenchers and Valerie’s Tearoom were planning to open their doors to customers for takeaways only from this Friday, June 5.

However, Kymel Trading, which manages Spanish City, has announced that the opening has been postponed until next week.

A spokesperson said: "We are delaying the reopening of Spanish City by one week.

"We have a duty to make Spanish City and our services completely safe for staff, customers and the public and we don't feel ready to open this Friday. We would rather not open than put anyone at risk.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause but we hope you will all understand this decision which we did not make lightly."

Both Valerie’s Tearoom and Trenchers will now reopen on June 12, with phone lines operating from June 10.

And the Dome's popular afternoon tea will also be available for collection from June 13 and can be pre-ordered from June 10.

The iconic landmark in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, had to close when the lockdown was announced in March.

Now as restrictions are eased across the country, the venue is among scores of others making preparations to reopen with social distancing and safety measures in place to protect staff and customers.

More details will be available on Spanish City's Facebook page here.
