Whitley Bay school confirms Covid cases as students told to self-isolate

A North Tyneside school has confirmed six students have tested positive for Covid-19.

Whitley Bay High School said it had informed all students who are close contacts and they are now self-isolating.

The school has been closed since breaking up for the Easter holiday last Friday - but parents informed the school of the positive cases earlier this week.

In at least one case the student was asymptomatic.

In a statement, the school's headteacher Steve Wilson said: "Prior to the Easter break, we asked parents to inform us if their children tested positive for Covid-19 over the holiday.

"Since students broke up for the holiday, we have been informed of six positive cases.

"We have been following Public Health England advice and, where needed based on the 48-hour tracing guidance following symptoms or a positive test, we have informed all close contacts who are now self-isolating.

All students are encouraged to take a Lateral Flow Test twice a week.

Mr Wilson added: "Given the vast majority of our 1,700 students are using the Lateral Flow Test, including during the holiday, it was probably inevitable that asymptomatic cases, that would have not previously been identified are now being picked up.

"I would like to thank our students, with the support of parents, for carrying out the twice weekly testing that is so important to stop the spread of the virus in our community."
