Whitley Bay High School sends pupils home as suspected gas leak is investigated

A school has been evacuated and pupils sent home after a suspected gas leak on the North Tyneside site.

Students at Whitley Bay High School were told to go home after a gas smell was reported in the B block of the school.

The upper school and sixth form was evacuated at around 10.15am on Tuesday and gas engineers were called out.

They then isolated the gas supply to the whole site.

The school took the decision to close and send all students home as a precautionary measure for the rest of the day.

Further tests are ongoing to determine the cause of the suspected leak and school says it will keep parents informed of any developments.

The school expects to open as normal on Wednesday.

A tweet from the school's account said: "WBHS is closing the school today due to a suspected gas leak.

" British Gas are currently on site and we are expected to open tomorrow as normal.

"We will update the website and Twitter later today. Thank you for your support."
