Headteacher Steve Wilson told ChronicleLive that students in some year groups were tested for Covid on Tuesday and others were due to be tested on Wednesday before teaching for those year groups began.

But the school's water supply was affected and the site had to close until all services were restored.

He added: "We informed parents by text that there had been a burst water pipe and that students would be moved to remote learning.

"We will continue to keep parents informed about the progress being made and when students can come back on site."

A spokesperson for North Tyneside Council confirmed: "Whitley Bay High School has moved to remote learning today following a burst water main on Tuesday afternoon.

"Work is ongoing to locate and repair the pipe and parents and students will be informed of progress and the arrangements for tomorrow by text message later today."
