MIAMI _ Hassan Whiteside offered the complete repertoire in this one, from jump shots to hooks to the usual fury at the rim. What the Miami Heat center couldn't offer was a complete game in terms of being out there for all 58 of the minutes that this one required.
And when he went to the bench in the fourth quarter, that's when Tuesday night got a bit too compelling and, ultimately, too disappointing.
With a 12-0 surge that started as Whiteside took a breather, the Orlando Magic pushed back in front early in the fourth quarter and then finished the job with a 136-130 victory in double-overtime at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Lacking a needed closer, and unable to execute when needed at the end of regulation and during the first overtime, the Heat fell to 2-3 on their six-game homestand, on a night when basically everything had to go wrong for the Heat _ and did _ in the latter stages for the Magic to win.
Whiteside matched his career high of 32 points, with 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, supported by a career-high 32 points from Tyler Johnson and 19 from Goran Dragic. The 30 points by Johnson were the most ever by a Heat reserve.
Guard Even Fournier scored 26 for the Magic, with 26 from center Nikola Vucevic and 20 from guard Elfrid Payton.
The Magic moved to their largest lead to that stage at 123-119 midway through the second extra period, before Heat forward Justise Winslow stepped up to tie it 123-123.
But a Fournier 3-pointer with 1:26 to play put the Magic up 126-123, with an Ibaka jumper making it a 128-123 Orlando lead with 53.3 seconds to play, effectively ending it.
The Heat went down four early in the first overtime, before tying it on baskets from Whiteside and Winslow.
Winslow then drew an offensive foul on Magic forward Serge Ibaka, with Whiteside scoring on a feathery hook with deep post position with 2:07 to play in the first overtime for a 115-113 Heat lead. A driving finger roll from Johnson followed for a 117-113 Heat lead, with Whiteside's fifth block following on the other end.
Vucevic then made one of two free throws to draw the Magic within 117-114.The Heat then had a difficult time inbounding, which resulted in Dragic's fifth foul, an offensive foul with 17 seconds left off the errant inbound attempt from Josh Richardson.
Two free throws from Payton moved the Magic within 117-116.
That's when Ibaka committed an away-from-the-ball foul on the ensuing Heat inbound attempt. But Dragic missed the free throw, leaving it as a one-point game.
Dragic then was sent back to the line with 16.4 seconds to play. Again he missed his first attempt before making his second, to put the Heat up 118-116.
Given a chance to tie, forward Jeff Green went to the line, fouled by Johnson, converting both attempts to tie it 118-118. A missed shot by Winslow and a deflected inbounds pass from the Magic ended the first overtime.
The Heat moved to a 108-103 lead with 48.3 seconds in regulation on a Dragic 3-pointer, but the Heat could not make it stand up, getting only a Richardson free throw the balance of the fourth quarter.
Against that Heat offensive struggle, the Magic got a Fournier 3-pointer to close within 108-105, and, after a failed Heat possession, a Green inside basket with 14 seconds to play in regulation to move within 108-107.
That's when, with the Heat at 14 of 16 from the line and Richardson at 2 of 2, Richardson missed the first and made the second for a 109-107 Heat lead.
Orlando then got wayward jumper from Fournier, with Ibaka banking in a wild rebound follow-up for a 109-109 tie, with the Heat getting only a jumper off the side of the rim from Dragic to close regulation.
With Rodney McGruder out with a sprained ankle, and with Wayne Ellington and Dion Waiters still out with injuries, the Heat had to yet again revise their starting lineup. That meant a return to starting five for Winslow, who was flanked in the opening unit by Whiteside, Dragic, Josh McRoberts and Richardson. McGruder had started the previous 14 games.
The game was the fifth on a six-game homestand that concludes Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers, a nationally televised game that will feature the halftime retirement of Shaquille O'Neal's No. 32 Heat jersey.
The Heat several times saw the Magic cut what had been a 12-point lead to one in the third period before the Heat went into the fourth quarter up 89-85.
The third quarter included a Flagrant 1 foul by Magic center Bismack Biyombo after a successful Johnson basket. That sent Dragic to the line with two chances to make one free throws, with Dragic needing only the first attempt.
Whiteside was up to 27 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots entering the fourth quarter, a stage when Winslow was 2 of 8 from the field.
The Heat utilized a 10-0 run to move to a 53-44 lead on the way to a 64-57 advantage at halftime, their highest-scoring half of the season. Whiteside, who had to be treated for a cut above his right eye in the second period, stood at 15 points and five rebounds at the break.
In the wake of their free-throw issues, the Heat opened 8-of-8 from the line before a Whiteside miss late in the second period. As it was, the Heat shot 59 percent from the field in the first half, their best shooting half of the season. Richardson already was up to six assists at halftime, besting his previous single-game best of five.
The Heat's early offense was boosted by a pair of Luke Babbitt 3-pointers, his first baskets of any kind since Nov. 30.
Last in the first half, Dragic was called for a Flagrant 1 foul for a kicking motion against D.J. Augustin, resulting in a four-point Magic possession.
The Heat shot 60 percent in the first quarter and got eight points on 4-of-4 shooting and five rebounds from Whiteside in the period to take a 28-27 lead into the second.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra allowed McRoberts to play through a pair of early fouls and, limited in the team's backcourt due to injury, elected to stay big with his early rotation, with minutes for Babbitt and Willie Reed.
It was the second game of the four-game season series and the first of the two meetings in Miami. The Heat won the first meeting 108-96 on opening night on Oct. 26 at the Amway Center, behind 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots from Whiteside, outscoring the Magic 58-43 in the second half.
The Heat entered having won six of the previous seven meetings, with victories in nine of the previous 10 meetings at AmericanAirlines Arena.
The Heat have not lost a season to the Magic since going 1-3 in 2008-09.
The Magic were coming off Sunday's 109-79 home loss to the Raptors, their fifth loss in seven games. The Magic, though, did enter a surprising 7-7 on the road.
