Whiteout conditions hit Falkirk as Storm Barra arrives bringing heavy snow

Storm Barra is battering down on Falkirk with whiteout conditions in parts of the district.

There's a Met Office Yellow 'be aware' warning in place for western parts of the area covering the places likes of Denny, Bonnybridge and Larbert, with up to 20cm of snow possible above 200m.

The alert is in place until midnight tonight, with residents being told to prepare for travel disruption.

Pictures shared on social media show blizzard like conditions in Limerigg, with snow being blown about in strong winds.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Spells of hill snow will spread northwards across northern England into Scotland during Tuesday, this snow becoming confined to areas north of the Central Belt of Scotland during the evening.

"2 to 5cm snow is expected to accumulate quite widely above 200 m with 10 to 20 cm likely in some higher areas, particularly in parts of the Southern Uplands and Highlands.

"Strong winds accompanying the snow will cause blizzards with drifting and poor visibility in places, especially over the highest routes."
