Whiteleys Retreat and NHS Ayrshire & Arran to strengthen links in bid to reach more families

NHS chiefs have pledged to strengthen links with a leading therapy base in a bid to help more local families access the support they need.

Whiteleys Retreat, on the outskirts of Ayr, will be offered up to even more youngsters in need of critical care and holiday breaks.

Health bosses in Ayrshire are keen to build on their working relationship with the Retreat, helping more families to benefit.

Whiteleys CEO Maxine Allan met with Hazel Borland, interim chief executive of Ayrshire & Arran health board, to discuss the partnership moving forward.

Maxine said: "At present, 75 per cent of our families are already coming from within Ayrshire.

"But we are acutely aware that there will be more out there who could benefit from gaining access to our facilities.

"The NHS is looking at ways to build Whiteleys into its framework in terms of referrals and letting us help those who need it most.

"At the moment, those referrals are probably more sporadic than anything else, so we'd like to improve on that if we can and reach more people."

Whiteleys boasts two cottage retreats at its base plus a mobile unit offered up by Crofthead Caravan Park.

But Covid restrictions have limited the facility to just running just one cottage at a time, impacting how many families can benefit from the service.

Ms Borland said: "Being able to witness first-hand the work that Whiteleys Retreat continues to provide for children, young people and their families living with cancer or another life altering illness is truly inspiring.

"NHS Ayrshire & Arran are looking forward to working closer with Whiteleys Retreat and to strengthen their partnership working in the future."
