Whiteladies Road given new name with graffiti for one day before removal

Whiteladies Road was graffitied with a new name last week – but only for a day.

A picture from Thursday (July 2) shows black paint was daubed over the street sign by the Victoria Rooms in Clifton.

On the low wall next to the sign, yellow graffiti spelled out the words "Lovely Ladies Lane".

The person who took the picture said the wall and sign had been scrubbed clean by Friday. Bristol City Council declined to comment.

The busy thoroughfare's name came under fire from University of Bristol alumnus Susannah Reid last month.

The Good Morning Britain presenter said it made her "skin crawl" in a discussion about racial injustice with Bristolian weatherman Alex Beresford, following the toppling of slave trader Edward Colston's statue.

But our reporter Tristan Cork investigated the history of Whiteladies Road and found it "almost certainly isn’t racist at all".

Bristol City Council conservation officer David Martyn revealed the name is most likely to have come from Whiteladies House, which could well have been named after a nearby field's "white ladies" - a folk name for snowdrops.

Tristan wrote: "In the early 1700s, Clifton was a tiny village on the top of the hill above Bristol.

"What seems to be possible is that the field was known for its snowdrops and became known as White Ladies field, and someone built a big house there, and named it Whiteladies House.

"Then came a pub [called the White Ladies], and as soon as you get a pub, that often names the road people walk along to get there."

You can read Tristan's full report on the meaning behind Whiteladies Road and Blackboy Hill – another name which attracted criticism from Susannah Reid – here.
