Whitehall Primary School criticised for electricity use as lights 'left on at night'

A primary school in East Bristol has been criticised for leaving some lights on at night.

A nearby resident has claimed lights are being left on overnight up to four nights a week at Whitehall Primary School, adding sometimes they are left on on a Friday which then means they are on all weekend. The neighbour, who preferred not to be named, said that it appears only the upstairs lights are left on, but that it is not possible to see all of downstairs from the outside.

He said this has been going on for a while, but that he doesn't think this is being done for security reasons as it is the first floor and all that can be seen from that angle is that the lights are on.

"This must cost an enormous amount of money," he said. "It seems to be completely random, I do not know if they are just forgetting to turn them off - hopefully it it is not deliberate.

"There are people who can not afford to heat their own houses or put the lights on - annual household energy bills are going to be above £3,000 in October. Imagine how much [electricity] they are wasting.

"It is the taxpayer who is ultimately paying for this which is unacceptable and they need to be brought to account. It is just wrong that they are wasting this much."

Whitehall Primary School and Bristol City Council were contacted for comment.
