Whitehall was on lockdown on Friday afternoon as police investigated a suspicious package.

The package was eventually removed and "made safe" before cordons were lifted.

Asked about the nature of the package, a Met spokeswoman said it was "far too early" to say.

The force said in a separate statement: "Police have removed a suspicious package from Whitehall.

"Enquiries continue.

"The public are thanked for their patience."

Whitehall is the home of numerous government departments.
