Whitehall on lock down as police probe 'suspect item'

Whitehall was on lock down this afternoon as police investigated a "suspect item".

Officers were called to the scene just after noon, with a bomb disposal unit following shortly afterwards.

A large cordon was put in place around the road in Westminster while specialist officers assessed the item.

The package was ultimately deemed non-suspicious, Westminster Police said.

The force tweeted at 1pm: "Happy to update the item concerned has now been fully assessed and deemed non-suspicious.

"Roads will be reopened shortly. Thanks again for your patience and cooperation."

The Cabinet Office had been closed off, with no one allowed to enter or leave.

A spokesman did not comment when approached by the Standard.

Whitehall is the home of numerous government departments.
