Whitechapel 'murder': Man 'shot in head' in east London dies as probe launched

A murder investigation has been launched after a man believed to have been shot in the head in east London died in hospital.

The victim, 40, was found collapsed with a head wound in Nelson Street, Whitechapel, shortly after 10.30pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to hospital but died two days later.

Detectives initially said the injury to his head was thought to have been caused by a bullet, but are waiting for a post-mortem to be carried out to confirm the cause of death.

The man's family have been told.

Detective Inspector Perry Benton said: "We're still in the early stages of our investigation but it is imperative that anyone with information regarding the incident contacts us as soon as possible.

"I am looking to speak to anyone who was in the area that Tuesday night and saw anything suspicious."

No arrests have yet been made.
