White water rafting plan for Dublin's Docklands shelved

Dublin City Council's controversial white water rafting plan for the Docklands has been shelved.

Council CEO Owen Keegan said they have been unable to secure funding from the State to get the project off the ground.

In a note sent to Councillors, Mr Keegan said that there had been significant hostility towards the project since it was announced.

Funding requests for the plans were refused by Government in March in a massive setback for the unprecedented George's Dock scheme.

Dublin City Council wanted €19m for the project as part of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund for the attraction - which doubled in price from its initial estimated cost.

Mr Keegan said a watersports facility would still be the best use of the Docklands space.

And a petition has been launched to construct a new public swimming pool on the proposed site.

The public lido would measure 50m in length and be heated, so it could be used all year round.

Fine Gael Councillor Danny Byrne welcomed the news, but warned against rushing into any alternative after the Council already pumped €2 million into the project.

He said: "The news that Dublin City Council will not now proceed is welcome.

"However I will take the opportunity to caution the Council management against rushing into an alternative proposal.

"Upwards of €2 million has been spent on this project and I think there now needs to be a period of reflection and lessons learned.

"The local swimming pool closed in 2019 on Sean McDermott Street due to a 'lack of funds'. This was seen in the local community as elitist and I agree with that."
