White van man's hilarious video after pal drove into 70mph river using sat nav

A bungling white van man recorded the hapless moment he realised he was stuck in a fast-flowing river after directing his pal using a sat nav .

Kieren Gibbons, 28, and the driver of the vehicle, were slammed for being "unbelievably stupid" after .

The dad-of-three was the passenger of the waste removal van but admitted he made a mistake to direct his colleague using the sat nav.

Recording footage from the cab of the stricken vehicle, he quips "the f*****g scuba divers are here man" as rescue teams turn up to help them.

Speaking exclusively to Mirror Online, Kieren said: "The emergency services said we could have lost our lives if we were two feet deeper. We would have been swept away down the river. It was proper bad. It was flowing really fast, about 70mph apparently.

"They [police and fire fighters] had a right go at us. They were telling us how stupid we were."

The colleagues had a French Bulldog in the van, who was "squealing" as water gushed up to the windows.

Shocked witnesses called emergency services, which had to deploy the fire crews, two police cars and the water rescue team.

A rescuer clad in scuba diving gear had to aid the operation to free the group in the nick of time.

The van was recovered but may still avoid the scrapheap.

Kieren, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, continued: "We were just following the sat nav on the way to a job and suddenly before we knew it, we were in the river. It was a ford really but because of the rain, it was really high. It was about three-and-a-half foot high.

"We tried to stop but it was too late. Water just started coming into the van. People were passing by, filming us, but they called emergency services."

And fire station manager Andy Creasy even criticised the van's occupants for "reckless stupidity" after he asked them why they had attempted to cross the flooded river.

He tweeted: "I had one question only, why did you attempt this? "The response was my SatNav said this way.

"Unbelievable stupidity."

The new footage, shared by Mirror Online, shows the men in the van moments before they were freed.

Kieren, who by this stage had switched to the driver seat in a desperate bid to get out of the vehicle, films water gushing past the van.

"Stuck in river," the dad says.

"The f*****g scuba divers are here man," he later adds.

"The fire brigade guy said 'what are you doing?'

"There's a crowd here now," he continues in the edited clip.

It ends with them on terra firma and a shot of the white vehicle deep in the river.

Since the bizarre rescue, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue took to Twitter urging people to avoid fast flowing water, especially in the current weather conditions.

They said: "Crews from Ripon have rescued two male occupants and a dog from a transit van that drove into a fast flowing river when crossing a ford.

"Please avoid fast flowing water with current weather conditions as they are."
