BOSTON — A day after losing shortstop Tim Anderson to a high ankle sprain, the White Sox lost third baseman Yoan Moncada from their game against the Red Sox with a right knee contusion.
Moncada, batting second in the first inning against Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale, was hit on the knee by a Sale pitch and stayed in the game after getting looked at by assistant trainer James Kruk, but exited after running to third base on Jose Abreu’s double into the right-field corner.
The Sox said Moncada is day-to-day. He missed time recently with a mild upper back strain.
Moncada was acquired from the Red Sox along with Michael Kopech and two other prospects in a trade for Sale in 2017. Moncada was hit by a slider from Sale, who allowed three runs in the first.
Yolmer Sanchez pinch ran for Moncada and entered the game at second base. Jose Rondon, in the lineup at second base, moved to third.
The Red Sox answered with two runs against Reynaldo Lopez in the bottom of the first.
