CHICAGO _ Meanwhile, there was a baseball game to be played.
Almost lost in the Chris Sale drama on the South Side and the news of Aroldis Chapman's impending arrival on the North Side was the fact the City Series pitting the Cubs against the White Sox kicked off Monday night at U.S. Cellular Field.
The Sox came out on top with a 5-4 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 39,510.
Tyler Saladino knocked in the winning run in the ninth inning for the White Sox with a single, scoring J.B. Shuck from second. It marked the third consecutive game the Sox had a walk-off winner.
Todd Frazier dealt the big blow with a three-run homer in sixth off Cubs start Jake Arrieta. Adam Eaton also singled in a run.
For the Cubs, Javier Baez (3-for-4) had a two-run blast in the seventh while Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo had RBI singles in the ninth to tie the game at 4.
In the starting duel, Miguel Gonzalez bested Arrieta by going 6 2/3 strong innings, yielding two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out a season-high eight. Dan Jennings got the win in relief.
Arrieta went six innings and gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
In one of the biggest plays of the game, White Sox left fielder Melky Cabrera leaped high over the wall to rob Kris Bryant of a homer in the top of the first inning.
