White Sox take 12 pitchers in 20-round draft

After taking high school shortstop Colson Montgomery with the 22nd overall pick and prep third baseman Wes Kath in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft, the White Sox went on a big run of pitchers, selecting 10 in a row through the 12th round. Nine of them were college pitchers.

The three-day, 20-round draft concluded Tuesday in Denver. The Sox wrapped it up by taking position players in rounds 13 through 19, then snagging one more pitcher, left-hander Haylen Green from TCU, in the final round.

The White Sox selected Brooks Gosswein of Barrington and Bradley University in the fourth round, one of seven lefties. They selected four infielders, two outfielders and two catchers.

“The best part of this job is at the end of the day watching the dreams come true for these kids,” second-year scouting director Mike Shirley told reporters.

The Sox envision Montgomery and Kath holding down the left side of their infield some day.

“The thing about these two playing together, growing up together, going through their careers together, it’s something that’s so exciting for us,” Shirley said. “We feel like we hit a home run with both of these guys together.”
