Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Mike Clevinger has officially signed a one-year, $3 million contract for the 2024 season. Clevinger returns to the White Sox after pitching for them in 2023 and opting out at the end of the year. He declined a $12 million option for this season back in November, choosing free agency instead.
In the 2023 season, Clevinger made 24 starts for the White Sox, achieving a 9-9 record with a 3.77 ERA, leading the team's starters in wins and ERA. With recent roster changes, including trading Dylan Cease and moving Michael Kopech to the bullpen, the White Sox rotation has seen adjustments.
Currently, Garrett Crochet anchors the rotation, having not previously started in the major leagues. The team's 1-4 start has raised concerns about the pitching staff's depth over a full season. Before Clevinger's signing, the rotation consisted of Crochet, Michael Soroka, Erick Fedde, and Chris Flexen, with only Crochet remaining from the 2023 roster.
Clevinger has been assigned to the Arizona Complex League for a spring ramp-up and is expected to join the big league club by the end of April. The White Sox are yet to name a clear fifth starter, but General Manager Chris Getz mentioned having candidates for the role.
Clevinger's durability and past performance make him a valuable addition to the rotation. With pitching depth in the farm system, the White Sox have options to support the rotation if needed. Notable prospects include Drew Thorpe, acquired in the Cease trade, and Nick Nastrini, who was in contention for a rotation spot during spring training.
To accommodate Clevinger, the White Sox designated infielder José Rodríguez for assignment. The team looks to strengthen its pitching staff with Clevinger's return and the potential contributions of promising prospects from the farm system.
