The White Sox signed veteran outfielder Brian Goodwin to a minor-league deal, a source confirmed Tuesday, as they look to add some depth to their thin outfield.
The team placed center fielder Luis Robert on the injured list Tuesday and recalled infielder Danny Mendick from Class AAA Charlotte to take his spot on the roster. Robert is out for three to four months with a torn right hip flexor.
The left-handed hitting Goodwin, 30, can play all three outfield positions and is a career .250/.317/.455 hitter with 42 home runs and 22 stolen bases. He signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in February and was released by the team 10 days ago. He hit .258/.327/.469 over 166 games with the Angels from 2019-20.
In 2019, Goodwin hit 17 home runs and had 47 RBI in 136 games for the Angels.
The Sox lost outfielders Eloy Jimenez and Adam Engel to injuries during spring training. Jimenez could miss the entire season and Engel (hamstring) will not start a rehab assignment for at least three weeks.
The team has Adam Eaton, Leury Garcia, Billy Hamilton and Andrew Vaughn in its outfield. Mendick has limited experience there, and Jake Lamb, a corner infielder by trade, has also been used in left field by manager Tony La Russa.
