The White Sox, addressing their need for backup catching, signed veteran Jonathan Lucroy to a minor league deal Thursday, a source confirmed. The deal comes with an invitation to spring training and is pending a physical.
After Yasmani Grandal, the departure of free agent James McCann left Zack Collins, Yermin Mercedes and Seby Zavala on the Sox catching depth chart.
A two-time All-Star, Lucroy, 34, appeared in only one game for the Red Sox last season after playing 101 games with the Cubs and Angels in 2019 when he batted .232/.305/.355 with eight homers and 36 RBI.
Lucroy was a 2014 and 2016 All-Star as a Brewers and finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 2014, but his offensive production declined after he left Milwaukee. He batted .253/.319/.348 with only 10 home runs in 935 plate appearances with the Rangers, Rockies, Athletics, Angels and Cubs from 2017-19.
Lucroy owns a .274/.335/.416 hitting line with a .751 OPS in 11 major league seasons.
