The White Sox are getting an important piece of their team back tonight.
Shortstop Tim Anderson, on the injured list with a high right ankle sprain since July 26, is returning to the team for its game against the Mets Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field after completing a minor league rehab assignment at Class AAA Charlotte.
The Sox also optioned outfielder Ryan Cordell to Charlotte and recalled right-hander Carson Fulmer to take the roster spot vacated by struggling righty Dylan Covey, who was shipped to Charlotte after he failed to retire a batter during his start against the Twins Sunday.
Anderson went 8-for-23 (.348) with a home run, double and four RBI in five games at Charlotte. He is batting .317 with 11 homers, with 14 doubles, 37 RBI, 39 runs scored, 15 steals and a .491 slugging percentage over 70 games this season. His .317 average would rank fourth in the American League with the required plate appearances.
Fulmer, 25, hasn’t fared much better than Covey, who was demoted with a 6.99 ERA. Fulmer is 1-1 with a 6.32 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 13 appearances (one start) over four stints covering 15 2⁄3 innings with the Sox this season. He is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA, one save and 49 strikeouts in 22 relief appearances over 30 innings with the Knights in 2019.
Since the Sox drafted him eighth overall out of Vanderbilt in the 2015 draft, Fulmer has a 6-8 record and 6.61 ERA, 76 strikeouts and 58 walks in 83 innings of work in the major leagues. He has appeared in 36 games, including 14 starts. In parts of five minor league seasons, Fulmer owns a 19-26 with a 4.99 ERA.
Cordell, 27, was batting .234 with six doubles, five home runs, 18 RBI and 15 runs scored over 69 games with the Sox.
In other Sox-related news, infielder Jose Rondon was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. Rondon was designated for assignment by the Sox on Sunday.
