White Sox second baseman Yolmer Sanchez won his first American League Gold Glove Award Sunday, edging DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees and Jose Altuve of the Astros in player and manager voting for the the AL’s best defensive player at his position.

Sanchez, who made three errors in his first five games, bounced back strong during a season in which he took over the middle infield position after playing third base in 2018, moving to second when Yoan Moncada switched from second base to third base.

Sanchez, 27, finished with nine errors and led all second baseman in defensive runs saved and ultimate zone rating. He batted .252/.318/.321 with two homers and 43 RBI over 149 games in what could be his last season with the Sox, who are expecting to promote top second base prospect Nick Madrigal early next season.
