Chicago will be well represented in the lineups of the July 17 All-Star game in Washington with three starting position players and a starting pitcher.
White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu was voted in as an American League starter, holding onto his lead despite a recent slump, while Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and second baseman Javier Baez earned starting nods for the National League team with late sprints to the finish line.
Cubs ace Jon Lester also was selected in the players vote, giving them three All-Stars on the NL team.
Abreu is the first Sox player to be voted in since Frank Thomas in 1996, and is making his first All-Star team since his rookie season in 2014.
Baez and Contreras are first-time All-Stars. Baez had been third in the voting going into the final week 270,297 behind the Braves' Ozzie Albies. He also jumped over the Reds' Scooter Gennett, who leads the league in hitting.
Contreras had been 144,499 behind the Giants' Buster Posey before passing the veteran in the final vote.
