March 14--GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Chris Sale is progressing well from his right foot fracture and ankle sprain and has been begin throwing.
"Definitely more reps, a little bit more volume," Sale said Saturday at Camelback Ranch. "I can stand on it now. I can do pretty much everything. I was out there throwing off a mound yesterday, doing some long toss today.
"Side to side stuff is still a little tough for now, but that will come with time."
Sale injured his foot on Feb. 27 and has been ruled out for the opening day start. The Sox don't have a timetable for his return, and Sale said he didn't know when he'd be back.
"Let's be honest," he said. "If I say a date and I don't do it, it's 'Oh my god, what's happening?' And if I come back too early, it's 'Oh they're rushing him.'
"We're gonna do what we need to do when we need to do it, and that's where we're at."
Sale did some light tossing on Saturday.
Sox manager Robin Ventura will chose between Jeff Samardzija and Jose Quintana as the opening day starter on April 6th in Kansas City. Samardzija was throwing a simulated game on a backfield on Saturday morning instead of starting in the Cactus League game against the Angels.
"They've got two good candidates for it," Sale said. "They're both very deserving. Both come with something pretty special behind it with 'Q' being the hard worker he has and being here for a while, and Jeff -- how cool would it be to be Cubs, White Sox (opening day starter) for consecutive years?
"Either way we're in good hands."
