The White Sox and Royals game at Guaranteed Rate Field is being delayed by rain.
The White Sox and Royals game is in the second rain delay of a long, wet Memorial Day afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.
In a brief few moments between delays, the Sox tied the game at 1 on Yolmer Sanchez’ RBI single scoring James McCann from second. Jose Rondon, who represented the go-ahead run, was caught going too far past second by right fielder Whit Merrifield, however.
Play had resumed at 5:38 p.m after a nearly three hour rain delay with Sanchez batting.
The first delay began at 2:38 p.m., one hour and 18 minutes after the start, with Sanchez batting with two runners on base and one out in the fifth.
Sox right-hander Ivan Nova and Royals righty Homer Bailey were the starting pitchers on a Memorial Day afternoon. Lefty Brian Flynn took over for Bailey after the delay.
The rain began during the second inning and came down heavily at times, prompting groundskeeper Roger Bossard and his crew to spread large amounts of drying agent on the infield dirt.
The umpires, led by crew chief Bill Miller, were trying to get an official game of 4 1⁄2 innings before the rain. But finally, with tornado warnings in the area, lightning flashed and, as the rain intensified, play was halted.
