White Sox rookie Reynaldo Lopez exits 9-8 loss to Rangers with right side soreness

ARLINGTON, Texas _ In his second White Sox start, right-hander Reynaldo Lopez left the game with soreness in his right side and will be re-evaluated Friday.

Sox manager Rick Renteria and trainer Herm Schneider went out to speak with Lopez with one out and two on base in the fifth inning of a 9-8 loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Park.

After a conversation with Lopez, they started back toward the dugout, then turned around and pulled Lopez, who pulled his cap off and walked off with Schneider with a straight face.

Lopez had allowed four earned runs at that point, and reliever Chris Beck allowed both inherited runners to score.

Adrian Beltre's comebacker hit Beck in the back, and a Yoan Moncada error allowed a run to score. Nomar Mazara then hit a three-run homer for an 8-5 Rangers lead before the Sox pulled Beck with a bruised right shoulder

Lopez gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits with four walks, six strikeouts and a home run.

The Sox didn't homer on the first pitch of Thursday's game as they did Tuesday and Wednesday.

Yoan Moncada waited until the 10th pitch.

The Sox rookie hit his third homer of the year out to right field in the first inning.

Moncada's shot gave the Sox their third first-inning lead in three games. On Tuesday and Wednesday against the Dodgers, Tim Anderson and Leury Garcia became the first Sox players to homer on the first pitch of consecutive games.

The Sox scored three third-inning runs off Rangers right-hander Tyson Ross. Jose Abreu hit a two-run single, and Yolmer Sanchez also drove in a run with a single.

Anderson's triple and Omar Narvaez's double each drove in a run in the seventh to cut the Rangers' lead to one run, but Brad Goldberg walked in a run in the seventh.

Abreu hit a solo homer off reliever Alex Claudio in the ninth to cut it to 9-8, but the Sox couldn't make up the final run.

After two scoreless innings, Lopez collapsed in the third.

He allowed a two-run homer to Brett Nicholas and then walked the bases loaded. Mazara hit a two-run single to center field to tie the game.

Lopez gave up single to Shin-Soo Choo in the first but had help from his defense.

But Adam Engel made an impressive running catch on Elvis Andrus' fly ball to center field, and catcher Omar Narvaez threw out Choo at second.
