Another ninth inning rally
Adam Engel doubled off the right-center field wall in the ninth, scoring Daniel Palka from first with the tying run, and Seby Zavala singled to center to score a sliding Engel to for the victory.
The Sox, who rallied for a Cactus League tie against the Dodgers in the ninth Monday, are 2-1-1 this spring.
Opening day preview?
Manager Rick Renteria fielded what could be his Opening Day lineup — with the exception of catcher Yasmani Grandal (calf) still out for another week or so — by lining up Tim Anderson (SS), Yoan Moncada (3B), Jose Abreu (1B), Edwin Encarnacion (DH), Eloy Jimenez (LF), Nomar Mazara (RF), Luis Robert (CF), James McCann (C), Leury Garcia (2B) against the Giants in Glendale. The only offense it produced, however, came from Abreu’s double down the third base line and Eloy Jimenez’ RBI single in the fourth, and Robert’s triple to right center and McCann’s RBI groundout in the fifth.
Around the horn
It was a mixed bag defensively for the Sox’ new-look outfield. Jimenez made a nice sliding catch ranging to his left in left, Robert made a running catch toward the wall in center look easy; and Mazara overran a base hit for an error in right. Against the Indians, third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert made two errors and catcher Yermin Mercedes was charged with a passed ball.
Shaky first outing for Herrera
Kelvin Herrera allowed three Giants runs in the third, giving up four straight hits including a double. Everyone else from the bullpen looked good in their one-inning stints, including Jimmy Cordero, who struck out the side; Aaron Bummer, who struck out two in a perfect inning. 2016 first rounder Zack Burdi, fully recovered from knee surgery that followed Tommy John surgery, threw consistently at 96 mph while pitching a perfect eighth.
On deck
Sox at Royals, Surprise, 2:05 p.m., Matt Tomshaw vs. Foster Griffin. Carson Fulmer and Tyler Johnson are also among scheduled pitchers.
