ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. _ White Sox left-hander Derek Holland was in need of a rebound start Thursday night after his worst outing of the season over the weekend.
The Rays didn't cooperate.
Holland allowed three homers and six earned runs in a 7-5 Sox loss at Tropicana Field. Holland allowed 14 earned runs in nine starts from April 12-May 27, and he has allowed 14 earned runs in his last two starts against the Tigers and Rays.
A late Sox rally fell short as they dropped to 1-7 in their last eight games.
Derek Norris homered twice, in the third and fourth innings, and Peter Bourjos went back-to-back with a solo homer in the fourth.
Norris has played two of the three games against the Sox despite a Major League Baseball investigation into domestic abuse allegations made against him by his ex-fiancee, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
The Rays went up 1-0 in the second. Tim Beckham walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Kiermaier's RBI double, which bounced off center fielder Adam Engel.
But the Sox got out of the inning without more damage thanks to a 5-2-5-1-6-2 double play.
With Kiermaier on third, Daniel Robertson knocked the ball to third baseman Todd Frazier who threw to catcher Kevan Smith to start the rundown on Kiermaier. Robertson was out trying to make it to third.
Norris homered to lead off the Rays' third, and Longoria hit a high RBI single that fell between second baseman Yolmer Sanchez and right fielder Avisail Garcia.
Norris hit a two-run homer to left field in the fourth, and Bourjos followed with his third homer of the season.
Avisail Garcia broke a 13-inning Sox scoreless streak with a three-run homer to left-center field off Jake Odorizzi in the sixth, his 10th homer of the year.
Frazier hit a two-run homer off the left-field foul pole against reliever Ryne Stanek in the eighth to cut the Rays' lead to 6-5. Tim Anderson brought the tying run to third base after he doubled and recorded his fifth stolen base, but Yolmer Sanchez grounded out and pinch-hitter Omar Narvaez popped out.
The Sox had a wacky play on the bases in the third inning, when Willy Garcia doubled and advanced to third on Kiermaier's throwing error to second. When Beckham's throw went past third base, Garcia tried to make it home but was thrown out by left fielder Peter Bourjos at the plate.
