
White Sox prospect Jonathan Stiever will make his major league debut Sunday when he starts against the Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Sox purchased the 23-year-old right-hander’s contract from the Schaumburg training facility and optioned right-hander Alex McRae to Schaumburg. Carlos Rodon was transferred to the 45-day injured list.
Stiever, rated No. 5 among Sox prospects by MLB Pipeline, has not pitched higher than Class A. At low A Kannapolis, he posted a 4.74 ERA over 14 starts, and after a promotion to advanced A Winston-Salem pitched to a 2.15 ERA with 77 strikeouts over 71 innings covering 12 starts. The Sox brought him to major league camp during spring training this year.
Stiever led the Big Ten in strikeouts his senior season at Indiana and was drafted by the Sox in the fifth round of the 2018 draft.
The Sox are going for a three-game series sweep against the Tigers.
