White Sox center fielder Luis Robert was placed on the injured list Tuesday after reporting flu-like symptoms to the team’s medical staff Monday night.
“As a precaution, we are placing Robert on the IL until we receive results from further testing,” general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “As was the case earlier this month with [right-hander] Dylan Cease, our hope is that his symptoms resolve quickly and that the testing protocols clear him to return to the active roster soon.”
Cease landed on the IL April 14 when he wasn’t feeling well and stayed away from the team for precautionary reasons. He not miss a start, taking his turn against the Red Sox April 17 after passing tests for the Coronavirus.
Right-hander Alex McRae will replace Robert on the active roster for the Sox’ game against the Tigers Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Prior to the game, the Sox recalled outfielder Luis Gonzalez from Schaumburg, filling the roster spot left open after right-hander Jonathan Stiever was returned to Schaumburg Monday.
Robert, 23, the 2020 American League runnerup in Rookie of the Year voting and a Gold Glove winner, is hitting .305/.356/.463 with one home run, eight doubles, one triple, six RBI and 10 runs scored. He has played in all 21 games for the Sox (12-9).
McRae, 28, was with the Sox from April 20-21 but did not pitch. He made two relief appearances with the Sox in 2020, allowing just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts over three innings.
