KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ The White Sox placed outfielder/designated hitter Avisail Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee before Tuesday's series opener against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
The Sox called up outfielder Jason Coats from Triple-A Charlotte to fill the roster spot left open by Garcia, who was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 7.
Garcia was hitting .240 with nine homers and 36 RBIs this season, but he was 7-for-24 with three home runs and six RBIs over his previous seven games before the injury.
Coats, a 26-year-old rookie, has gone 2-for-22 with a double and two runs scored in 12 games over two previous stints with the Sox this year.
