White Sox pitchers set franchise record with 20 strikeouts in 4-1 win over Tigers

CHICAGO _ Reynaldo Lopez set a career high with 14 strikeouts Sunday as the White Sox defeated the Tigers 4-1.

Lopez allowed one unearned run and two hits in six innings for his second win of the season in front of 14,539 fans at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Lopez and three Sox relievers combined for 20 strikeouts, which set the franchise's single-game record. The Sox had 19 strikeouts in a game three previous times, each in extra innings.

The Sox limited the Tigers to two hits.

Lopez struck out at least two Tigers in each of his six innings.

The right-hander struck out Detroit's dangerous duo of Nicholas Castellanos twice and Miguel Cabrera three times.

Lopez became the first Sox pitcher with 14 strikeouts in a game since Chris Sale against the Mariners on Aug. 26, 2016. The strikeout total is tied for the eighth-best for a Sox pitcher in a single game. Jack Harshman holds the franchise's single-game record with 16 strikeouts against Boston on July 25, 1954.

Two of Lopez's three walks came in the sixth inning. Lopez got out of the jam by striking out Brandon Dixon on his 105th, and final, pitch of the game.

Lopez began the day with a 7.46 ERA. He lowered it to 6.03.

Sox manager Rick Renteria wasn't around to see most of the pitching performance. Umpires ruled Jose Abreu was out of the baseline while trying to reach on a dropped third strike in the third inning. Renteria argued the call and was ejected.

Catcher Welington Castillo supplied the offense early, knocking in two runs with a two-out double to right field in the first inning. The Sox added a run in the seventh and one more in the eighth.

Detroit starter Matthew Boyd pitched well in the loss, allowing two earned runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out nine.
