PITTSBURGH — Outfielder Adam Engel, who had been limited to playing every other day since returning from the injured list this month, went back on the 10-day IL Tuesday with a strained right hamstring. The Sox recalled outfielder Luis González from Triple-A Charlotte before opening a two-game series with the Pirates Tuesday night.
Engel first strained the hamstring making a play in center field during a Cactus League game in March. His return took longer than expected because of a setback during his rehabilitation for the injury. He made his season debut on June 6.
Engel, 29, is batting .241 (7-for-29) with three home runs, four RBI and five runs scored in 10 games.
The Sox outfield core has been depleted by injuries to Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, Adam Eaton and Engel, the projected top four outfielders who are all in the injured list now.
Jimenez is recovering from a pectoral muscle tear and Robert has a hip flexor strain. Engel, Eaton, Nick Madrigal (out for the season), Tim Anderson, Billy Hamilton and right-hander Michael Kopech have been sidelined with hamstring injuries. Hamilton in currently on the IL with an oblique strain.
González, 26, is batting .195 with three doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and five stolen bases in 24 games with Charlotte. He made his only appearance with the Sox this season as a defensive replacement on April 29 vs. Detroit. He made his debut last season and is 0-for-1 with a run scored in four career games.
