Second baseman Nick Madrigal officially landed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, and the White Sox also optioned outfielder Nicky Delmonico to the team’s Schaumburg training facility.
All rosters were reduced from 30 players to 28 Thursday. Major league baseball’s original plan was to reduce rosters to 26 in two weeks but they will stay at 28 in light of health and safety issues related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Additionally, taxi squads will be increased from three to five players for the rest of the season. Introduced for the shortened 60-game season, taxi squads allow teams to take extra players on road trips to help expedite roster changes.
Delmonico was 3-for-15 this season.
Madrigal was 5-for-17 (.294), collecting four of his hits Sunday against the Royals in Kansas City. He separated his shoulder sliding into third base Tuesday in Milwaukee, and the Sox announced Wednesday that he was headed to the IL. General manager Rick Hahn said Madrigal might be able to return this season but could require surgery after the season.
