Jose Abreu extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a two-run double in the sixth inning Friday, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals, 7-4, at Kauffman Stadium.
Abreu went 2 for 5 as the Sox (24-15) moved back into first place in the American League Central. The Sox are a half-game ahead of the Cleveland Indians (23-15) and the Minnesota Twins (24-16).
Abreu has 38 RBIs in 39 games.
The game Friday in Kansas City, Mo., featured a pitching matchup between Dane Dunning and Brady Singer, who were college teammates at Florida in 2016.
Dunning allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. It was his third big league outing, and like the first two, he didn't factor in the decision.
Singer surrendered five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 5 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
The Sox took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Edwin Encarnacion scored on a Singer wild pitch. Abreu extended the lead _ and his hitting streak _ with his two-out, two-run double off Jesse Hahn in the sixth.
Left fielder Eloy Jimenez had two singles, a double and an RBI. Shortstop Tim Anderson went 2 for 4 with two runs, one stolen base and one RBI. He's hitting .352.
Sox reliever Codi Heuer had one strikeout in 1 1/3 hitless innings to improve to 2-0.
With the Sox leading 7-3, closer Alex Colome struck out Whit Merrifield with the bases loaded to end the eighth inning.
The Royals scored once in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate in Ryan McBroom. He hit the ball in front of the plate, and catcher James McCann threw him out at first to end it.
