White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito is soaking up the honors Monday.
Giolito was named American League Pitcher of the Month and AL Pitcher of the week. The 24-year-old was 5-0 with a 1.74 ERA over 41 1⁄3 innings covering six starts in May, and won both of his starts against the Royals and Indians last week, pitching to a 1.76 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 15 1⁄3 innings.
Continuing his remarkable turnaround from his first full season with the Sox in which he struggled to throw strikes, Giolito struck out 46 and walked 10 while allowing 24 hits in May.
Sox shortstop Tim Anderson was named AL Player of the Month for April. Anderson, 25, and Giolito, 24, are the first Sox tandem to win the honors in consecutive months since Frank Thomas (August) and left-hander Wilson Alvarez (September) in 1993.
Giolito and Anderson are the first set of Sox teammates to win monthly honors in the same season since pitchers Jake Peavy (April) and Sale (May) in 2012.
Giolito is the first Sox winner since Chris Sale in 2015 and the firstSox pitcher to earn five wins while posting a 1.75 ERA or better with at least 45 strikeouts in a calendar month since Jack McDowell in July 1994.
He opened the month of June by pitching 7 1⁄3 innings of scoreless ball in the Sox’ 2-0 victory over the Indians Sunday.
