Eloy Jimenez had three hits, including a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the fifth, for the Chicago White Sox on Monday against the Cleveland Indians.
But Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, and the Indians went on to beat the Sox 7-4 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
Jimenez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss.
Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal left in the eighth inning with a bruised right hand. The Sox said his X-ray was negative and he is day to day. Grandal took a foul tip off his right hand in the bottom of the seventh.
The Sox (34-20) have dropped three of four. Their magic number to clinch the American League Central remains four. They have a 1{-game lead over the second-place Minnesota Twins (33-22), who were off Monday. The Indians (30-24) are four games back.
Jose Ramirez gave the Indians an early lead with a three-run homer off Dane Dunning in the first. Josh Naylor doubled and scored on a single by Cesar Hernandez to make it 4-0 in the second.
Dunning allowed four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in four innings.
The Sox tied the game with four in the fifth. Jose Abreu knocked in two with a two-out single to center. Abreu leads the AL with 55 RBIs.
Jimenez followed with his 14th home run, tying the score at 4.
The tie didn't last long.
Reliever Jace Fry walked Ramirez with one out in the fifth. Santana followed with his sixth homer to left-center.
The Indians tacked on a run in the seventh.
The Sox brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth. James McCann struck out looking, and manager Rick Renteria was ejected for arguing the third strike. Brad Hand struck out Abreu looking to end the game.
The Indians beat the Sox for the fifth time in seven meetings this season.
