GLENDALE, Ariz. — White Sox right-hander Jimmy Cordero underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, the team announced Friday.
Cordero was a workhorse during the abbreviated 60-game 2020 season, ranking second among American League pitchers with 30 appearances, but will be lost for this season. He pitched to a 6.28 ERA over 26 2⁄3 innings after posting a 2.75 ERA in 30 relief appearances in 2019.
Cordero also appeared in two of the Sox’ three Wild Card games against the Athletics, allowing no runs on one hit and a walk over 3 2⁄3 innings.
Until Friday, it was not known that Cordero was hurt. Cordero appeared in two games for early in training but hasn’t appeared in a game since March 9 when he allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Padres.
Cordero’s procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Fla.
It seemed unlikely Cordero would make the Opening Day roster with a deep bullpen featuring Liam Hendricks, Aaron Bummer, Evan Marshall, Michael Kopech, Garrett Crochet, Codi Heuer, Matt Foster and perhaps Reynaldo Lopez, but Cordero would have been at the top of the depth chart in reserve and likely would have seen action this season.
