Friday's recap: Tigers 2, White Sox 1

April 18--The summary

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias's RBI single in the ninth inning off White Sox reliever Zach Duke gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory Friday at Comerica Park. Nick Castellanos started the rally when he doubled to right field, beating an Alexei Ramirez tag at second base, according to the ruling on the field. Sox manager Robin Ventura did not challenge the call, and pinch-runner Andrew Romine scored the winning run.

On the mound

Right-hander Jeff Samardzija allowed one run -- on Yoenis Cespedes' homer -- while scattering eight hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks over eight innings in his best start of 2015.

At the plate

The Sox managed just four hits in eight innings off left-hander David Price, who struck out nine and walked two. Avisail Garcia scored the lone run on his homer to right field.

In the field

Geovany Soto caught Samardzija for the second straight game, a pairing Ventura made because he thinks their familiarity with one another helps.

On tap

Ventura said left-hander Jose Quintana will face the Tigers on Sunday. The Sox will skip right-hander Hector Noesi in the rotation.

The quote

"I learned over the last few years when you're facing the other team's ace you have to be ready to go. You can't make any mistakes, and that homer to Cespedes was the difference in the game. ... If I'm most proud of anything, it was pitches with runners in scoring position. They like to run and we cut that out." -- Samardzija

The quote II

"(The umpire) just missed the play. I am sure that I tagged him, and I think he was in the wrong spot to see the play. For me it is clear, and I felt it." -- Ramirez on key play

Up next

At Tigers, 12:08 p.m. Saturday, WGN-9.
