July 01--ST. LOUIS -- White Sox left-hander Chris Sale makes his first career start against the Cardinals -- and his 100th overall -- Tuesday at Busch Stadium, where the Cardinals have gone 29-7 this season. Sale is looking to record 10 strikeouts in his eighth straight start, which would tie the major-league record set by Pedro Martinez in 1999.
At the plate
Sox center fielder Adam Eaton will lead off, followed by first baseman Jose Abreu, left fielder Melky Cabrera, right fielder Avisail Garcia, third baseman Conor Gillaspie, shortstop Alexei Ramierz, catcher Tyler Flowers, second baseman Carlos Sanchez and Sale.
On the mound
Sale enters with a 6-4 record and a 3.02 ERA. He faces Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, who is 5-4 with a 2.84 ERA.
Key number
1.85 -- Sale's ERA over his last nine starts. He gave up five earned runs in his last outing against the Twins.
The quote
"It has really become about managing innings, exertion, all the things that go with it. If it doesn't go right and there's an error made behind you, you're able to get after the next guy. He's just a more mature person on the mound when he goes out there and goes through the middle of the innings. That's just been something that's been fun to watch for me." -- Sox manager Robin Ventura on Sale
