Oct. 03--Chris Sale broke 107-year-old team strikeout record Friday night while leading the White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field. The left-hander gave up one run and struck out seven over seven-plus innings to bring his season total to 274 strikeouts, topping Ed Walsh's 269 in 1908.
Key at-bat
Adam Eaton's two-run double to center field off Alfredo Simon in the third gave the Sox a 2-1 lead.
On the mound
Before the called strikeout of James McCann that secured the record in the second, Sale gave up a homer to Jefry Marte.
In the field
Sox right fielder J.B. Shuck made a spectacular tumbling catch of Dixon Machado's fly ball, securing the ball with his bare hand after it popped out of his glove to end the Tigers' seventh.
Key number
3 -- American League left-handers since 1972 to record 270 or more strikeouts in a season -- Sale, Randy Johnson and David Price.
The quote
"It just puts him up there with the elite. Tonight, it just seemed like there was a little something extra in there, even right from the start. Three strikeouts can be tough, but he went right after it. He laid it all out there. He was gassed by the end of it." --Sox manager Robin Ventura on Sale
