White Sox’ four-run inning produces tie with Angels

Rally produces tie

The Sox are 0-1-1 after erasing a 4-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth inning on Luis Robert’s RBI double, Micker Adolfo’s RBI single and sacrifice flies by Adam Eaton and Zach Remillard. Eaton reached base twice, letting a pitch hit him on the arm and slashing a single to left. Robert’s double was a liner off the wall against righty Luke Bard, who gave up all four runs and had to be relieved by manager Joe Maddon.

What about the pitching?

Right-hander Ryan Burr allowed three runs in the third. Tayron Guerrero loaded the bases with no outs then escaped getting a pop-up by Shohei Ohtani and two strikeouts.

A warm embrace

Tony La Russa and the Angels’ Albert Pujols hugged behind home plate before the game in a reunion between the manager and slugger who won two World Series together. Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert accompanied La Russa for the visit. Pujols, who might retire after the season, was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI singles.

Jose Abreu, who was not on the bus trip to Tempe, would have been second in line to greet Pujols, a friend with whom he and Pujols share similar traits, manager Tony La Russa said.

“Abreu deserved the MVP, not just for what he does to help the team with his glove and his bat, but making his teammates better,” La Russa said. “I compare it to the guys that I watched on a daily basis, most recently Albert, Yadi [Molina], Pudge [Carlton Fisk] a long, long time ago [with the Sox in the 1980s], and he’s in that company. That’s why he and Albert are friends. They understand the responsibility, they embrace it. Very special.”
