White Sox drop 2nd game of doubleheader against Tigers, 10-6

DETROIT _ Hector Santiago pitched for the White Sox from 2011 to '13 and again in 2018.

He returned to the mound for the Sox in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tigers and allowed five runs (four earned) and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 10-6 loss.

Santiago struck out five and walked two as the Sox saw their three-game winning streak end in front of 16,367 at Comerica Park.

The Sox had to settle for a split in the doubleheader after winning Tuesday's first game, 5-3. The second game featured a 1-hour, 1-minute rain delay.

Santiago, 31, signed with the Sox on June 21 as a minor league free agent, and they added him from Triple-A Charlotte earlier Tuesday.

He went a combined 4-5 with a 4.50 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 15 games (14 starts) for Triple-A Syracuse and Charlotte. Santiago was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in eight relief appearances for the Mets before they designated him for assignment June 15.

Tuesday marked his first start since June 6, 2018, when he allowed two runs on six hits in five innings for the Sox against the Twins.

Center fielder Adam Engel supplied the defense early, making a catch while crashing into the wall for the final out of the first inning.

The Tigers scored twice in the second, once in the third and two more in the fifth. Miguel Cabrera and John Hicks both scored twice.

Engel also aided the offense, driving in James McCann with a double in the fifth. Ryan Goins knocked in Leury Garcia with a single in the seventh. Goins had three hits and two RBIs, and Garcia and Eloy Jimenez also had three hits. The Sox had 14 hits and the Tigers 16.

Engel collected another RBI when he got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded during a three-run eighth.

The Sox got within 7-5, but the Tigers scored three in the eighth to pull away.
