The White Sox activated shortstop Tim Anderson from the 10-day injured list Thursday and designated outfielder Nick Williams for assignment to make room on the 26-man roster.
Anderson suffered a strained left hamstring on April 4 and was placed on the injured list on April 7 (retroactive to April 5). The 2019 AL batting champion and 2020 Silver Slugger Award winner is 3-for-15 with one home run in four games.
Manager Tony La Russa said that Anderson would be in the starting lineup leading off for the final game of the Sox’ four-game series with the Indians.
Williams hit .300/.364/.475 in 46 plate appearances during spring training but was 0-for-10 with two walks in four games with the Sox after his contract was purchased from Schaumburg on April 8. His ground ball to first base that led to Indians first baseman Yu Chang’s throwing error which scored the winning run in a walk-off victory against the Indians Monday night was his highlight.
Williams, who bats left, batted fifth and started in left field in the Sox’ 2-0 loss to the Indians and Cy Young winner Shane Bieber on Tuesday.
The Sox have a week to trade Williams or attempt to pass him through outright waivers.
