The White Sox’ Field of Dreams game against the Cardinals in the Iowa corn fields Aug. 13 has been cancelled.
The game, which was slated for Dyersville, Iowa, near the location of the “Field of Dreams” motion picture, is a home game on the Sox schedule and would be played at Guaranteed Rate Field instead. Friday, Aug. 14 is an open date with the Cardinals scheduled to play the Sox in Chicago Aug. 15 and 16.
A White Sox spokesman said the team has not yet received official word from Major League Baseball. The Des Moines Register reported the game is expected to be moved to 2021 with the White Sox participating against an opponent to be determined.
The game was originally set for the Sox to play the Yankees but the revised schedule due to the coronavirus took the Yankees off the Sox’ schedule.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, have bigger concerns, having been greatly affected by the coronavirus in recent days. Major League Baseball announced Monday afternoon that the four-game series between the Tigers and the Cardinals at Comerica Park in Detroit from Aug. 4-6 has been postponed.
The Cardinals have had 13 members of the organization test positive for the coronavirus in the last week, including seven players and six staff members. The team has been in quarantine since Thursday and will stay in Milwaukee and their personnel will continue to be tested daily.
The tentative plan is for the Cardinals to resume their regular schedule on Friday against the Cubs in St. Louis.
A temporary 8,000-seat stadium was being constructed at the site of the Field of Dreams game, although it was unlikely fans would be allowed to attend.
