White Sox call up former top pick Carson Fulmer, reinstate Justin Morneau

Ready or not, here comes Carson Fulmer.

The White Sox called up their 2015 first-round draft pick for the opener of a three-game series against the Angels, one of three moves the team announced Friday.

The Sox also reinstated first baseman Justin Morneau from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Jason Coats to Triple-A Charlotte.

Morneau, 35, had been on injury rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Birmingham after offseason elbow surgery. The former AL MVP signed with the Sox on June 9.

Fulmer, 22, had been pitching at Birmingham this season, his second in the minors after being selected No. 8 overall in last year's draft.

He was 4-9 with a 4.76 ERA with 51 walks and 90 strikeouts over 17 starts this season. He was strong over his last three starts, allowing two earned runs with 22 strikeouts over 19 innings. He also pitched a perfect inning in the Futures Game during All-Star festivities in San Diego on Sunday.

He had a 1.96 ERA in 23 innings in 2014.

Fulmer could be used out of the bullpen after the club sent reliever Chris Beck to Triple-A Charlotte before the All-Star break. The Sox also outrighted Scott Carroll to Charlotte on Thursday afternoon to clear space on the 40-man roster for Fulmer.

Sox manager Robin Ventura spoke last week about the possibility of adding Fulmer for a relief role.

"You're trying to see if a kid can do it, and we did it with Carlos (Rodon) a little bit and Chris (Sale) has done it," Ventura said. "You bring 'em up here and you bring 'em through out of the bullpen and see if you can lighten their load a little bit and then see how they handle it."

The Sox also need a temporary replacement in the rotation for Rodon, who is out with a left wrist sprain.
